The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) hosts the UEFA Champions League each year, which is a club football competition between top-tier European clubs. The championship is decided by a round-robin group stage and knockout round event.
History
The European Cup was the original name of the competition when it was first played in 1955. In 1992, the name was changed to the UEFA Champions League. Since then, it has grown to be the most prestigious club football event in the world and is considered the most challenging club trophy to take home.
Format
32 teams, split into eight groups of four clubs each, compete in the UEFA Champions League. In a round-robin style, each team plays the other three teams in its division both at home and away. The top two clubs from each group go to the knockout round, and the team that finishes third plays in the UEFA Europa League.
Knockout Round
The UEFA Champions League's knockout stage is a single-elimination competition featuring two-leg rounds. Moving on to the next round is the team with the highest combined score after the two legs. A single game is played in the final at a neutral site.
Winners
Real Madrid, with a record 14 championships, is the most successful team in the UEFA Champions League. AC Milan (7 titles), Bayern Munich (6 titles), Liverpool (6 titles), and Barcelona (5 titles) are some other notable teams.
Present-day Champions
Real Madrid, which eliminated Liverpool in the 2022–23 championship match, is the current UEFA Champions League winner.
Every match in the league begins with the playing of the UEFA Champions League anthem. Tony Britten wrote the anthem, which was originally played during the 1992–1993 campaign.

It may be incredibly challenging to find tickets for the UEFA Champions League final because they are so highly sought after. The general public often buys tickets through a lottery system.
How It Works
During the summer, teams compete in the qualification stage of the UEFA Champions League. The group stage is played from September to December, and the winners of the qualification process progress to that level. Eight groups of four teams each contain eight of the 32 teams competing in the group stage. In a round-robin style, each team competes in six group stage matches, playing the other three teams in its group both at home and away.
The knockout phase, which starts in February, features the top two teams from each group. The teams face off against one another at both their home and away venues during the knockout phase. A team progresses to the next round if it scores more goals throughout the course of the two legs.
Rewards
The UEFA Champions League champion is eligible for the FIFA Club World Cup, the UEFA Super Cup, and the Champions League the following year. A sizeable monetary award is also given to the Champions League champion, and it is divided among the competing clubs according to how well they fared in the match.
